A week ago I had laser eye surgery and my eyes are healing fast. I had almost perfect 20:20 at the 24 hour check up. At this stage there is still a little glare and dryness and things aren't quite as sharp as I'd like. I keep telling myself that it'll improve in time.
In the meantime it's hard to find activities that don't involve straining my eyes. Reading, computer use, mobile phone usage are slightly irritating. I've tried changing the text size and the brightness on my laptop, we'll see how it goes.

Midterm break is a strange mix of taking an actual break, tidying the house and preping for the weeks from now to xmas holidays. I have a small list of things I'd like to have done in the hope that it will make the next few months less of a struggle. Clear surfaces and room for storage behind closed press doors contribute to a clear mind and a sense of peace.

I've gotten out of the habit of writing in my journal. I need to pick that back up.
Now its time for some homemade veg soup and some fresh bread.

Meme, stolen from several people [personal profile] gothwalk originally I think.

Go-to hot drink? When I'm working or at an event I love a proper coffee. However in the evenings or when I'm relaxing or on a Sunday morning with breakfast it has to be a good pot of strong tea. Tea is childhood and home.

What book gets you into the cosy spirit? An book will do, although if its one I've already read it takes less effort. A comfy chair, a lap blanket, thick socks, and candles or an open fire, and any book.

Favourite costume as a child? Aw bless - for years getting dressed for halloween involved a black plastic bag and one of my mother's old lipsticks. Then there was 10p plastic masks with the elastic stapled on, lasted all of 2 minutes. Proof that it wasn't just in Offaly.

What woodland animal do you connect to on an emotional level? Now this one got me google-ing,  I ended up on wikipedia, reading about the birds, fish, and mammals of Ireland as I considered my options which included pine martens, deer, butterflies, hare, fox,  shrew. (Stoats are nasty, so I'm ignoring them). But my gut reaction is robin, so I'm sticking with that.

Film that gets you in the spooky spirit? NOT a fan of horror, but I do like films with magic. Halloween movies include The Corpse Bride, The Nightmare Before Xmas, Practical Magic, Hocus Pocus and Coco.

Favourite tasty treat to bake? Bread, scones, spice biscuits. My eldest made a batch of biscuits yesterday that I've been calling soul cakes despite the absence of raisins .

Do you fantasise about falling in love with a hot vampire or sickly ghost?   No.

The scent you want filling your room? woodsmoke and bubbling stew.

Pick a date- gingerbread biscuit decorating, pumpkin patch, hunting through a book shop, popcorn and spooky films?  Bookshop, duh. But first an invigorating walk through the woods, then a spot of book shopping, topped of with ye olde pub vist, hot meat pie with gravy and a beer.

If you were a coffee syrup or spice which would you be? chai tea / latte

Any ghostly encounters? yet to experience anything that can't be explained by creaky houses and heightened nerves.

Favourite time of day during the cinnamon season? That's a hard one; frost sunlit mornings, leaf twirling windy afternoons, or firelit evening meals. I love it all.

Knitting

I like to make things. My medium of choice is fibre, I mostly knit, though I can crochet, embroider, crossstitch, basic weaving etc.
This past month I've knit a shawl for my mother-in-law, a baby Jedi robe, sewn an apron and I've started a jumper for my newest nephew.

The next knitting project(s) are a cardigan for my elder clone because her current favourite singer wore it. Thankfully I got the pattern online, now to get it knit before she stops liking the artist!

Then I want to crochet a big wool blanket to a) use up all the random balls I have, b) free up space for better yarn, and c) to have blankets that both my clones can take with them when they move out.

And I think I'd like a jumper like this for me.

For multiple reasons I started paying more attention to my garden this April. There was a lot of chatter on the webz about growing your own vegetables, sowing bee friendly plants, letting manicured lawn grow wild.
Looking at my garden now is so uplifting, theres always something new growing. Quite a lot of wildflowers have appeared and I like looking them up online and finding out about them.
Most recently this little gem appeared
lots of green grass and leaves, dark rosette at top of stem, one to two purple petals..
This is Prunella vulgaris, or self-heal. If you are a herbalist, this plant is very handy, with lots of uses (pfaf.org/user/plant.aspx). As a general heal-all, this plant is good for what ails ya.

I've been fooling around with dreamwidth for 3 hours now, figuring out how to upload images etc. I'm not sure I like it yet.
